A Prayer for Anxiety and Overthinking: Give Your Worries to God

A grounding prayer and practical reflection for the moments when fear is loud and your thoughts will not slow down.

Overthinking can make one concern feel like twenty. Prayer does not require you to deny what you feel. It gives you a place to bring each worry, one at a time, while you also reach for the practical support you need.

Name the worry instead of wrestling the whole cloud

Write the sentence your mind keeps repeating. Then separate what needs action today from what is outside your control. Pray over both lists differently: ask for wisdom for the first and surrender for the second.

In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Philippians 4:6-7 · KJV

A simple pause when your thoughts race

  1. 1Put both feet on the floor and take a slow breath.
  2. 2Name five things you can see.
  3. 3Tell God the specific fear beneath the noise.
  4. 4Choose one safe, practical next step.
  5. 5Repeat a short Scripture instead of arguing with every thought.

Prayer and Scripture can support your faith as you heal, but they do not replace qualified medical, mental-health, addiction, or emergency care. Seeking appropriate professional help is a wise and faithful step.

Questions to sit with

  1. 1What thought keeps repeating today?
  2. 2Is there one action I can take, or is this something I need to release?
  3. 3What truth from Scripture speaks directly to this fear?
  4. 4Who is a safe person I can contact if this feels too heavy?

One small step

Try this today

  • Make two columns: what I can do and what I must release.
  • Read Philippians 4:6-7 slowly three times.
  • Ask for qualified support if anxiety is disrupting daily life.

Pray this

A prayer when your mind will not rest

God, my thoughts are moving faster than I can carry them. You know the questions, the imagined outcomes, and the fear underneath all of it. I do not want to pretend I am calm; I want to bring You what is real.

Here is the worry I keep returning to. Help me see what belongs to today and what I have borrowed from tomorrow. Give me wisdom for the action that is mine, courage to ask for help, and grace to release what I cannot control.

Quiet does not come easily right now, so meet me in the noise. Remind my body that I am here, remind my heart that I am loved, and remind my mind that every frightening thought is not a prophecy. Lead me toward good care and safe people when I need more support than I can give myself.

Keep my thoughts in Your truth. Give me peace for this breath, this hour, and this next step—not because every question is answered, but because I do not face them alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
