How to Write Letters to God in Your Journal
A simple, honest way to turn journal pages into prayers of gratitude, lament, confession, questions, and surrender.

A letter to God can help when spoken prayer feels scattered. You can begin with ‘Dear God’ and write exactly what is true—without polishing the emotion first.
Five kinds of letters to try
- Gratitude: thank God for specific gifts.
- Lament: tell the truth about loss or injustice.
- Confession: name what is yours and receive grace.
- Question: write what you do not understand.
- Surrender: place a person, plan, or outcome back in God's care.
