How to Hear God Through Journaling—with Wisdom and Discernment

Use journaling to listen, test impressions against Scripture, seek wise counsel, and avoid treating every thought as God's voice.

Journaling can help you notice thoughts and patterns, but writing something down does not make it a message from God. Discernment stays rooted in Scripture, the character of Jesus, wise counsel, and honest reality.

Write freely, then test carefully

  1. 1Begin with Scripture rather than an empty demand for a sign.
  2. 2Write what you sense without immediately labeling it God's voice.
  3. 3Ask whether it agrees with Scripture and reflects God's character.
  4. 4Look for humility, truth, love, wisdom, and responsibility—not flattery or panic.
  5. 5Seek counsel before major decisions.
  6. 6Allow time to reveal what is trustworthy.
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.
1 John 4:1 · KJV
