What to Put in Your Prayer Journal: 10 Pages to Help You Pray With Intention

A prayer journal isn't an assignment. It's a place to remember what you asked God for — and what He was doing in you while you waited.

Most prayer journals die on page four. Not because the woman holding it stopped loving God, but because nobody told her what to write. A blank page is intimidating, and "journal your prayers" is not instructions.

So here's what actually goes in one. Ten sections. You don't need all ten on day one — pick two and start there.

Why writing changes your praying

Writing slows you down. Spoken prayer can run in circles; written prayer has to land somewhere. It also gives you a record. Six months from now you'll turn back a page and see the thing you begged God for — and realise He answered it while you were busy worrying about something else.

The 10 pages

1. Praise & Thanksgiving

What to write: three specific things you're grateful for today — not general ones. "My daughter laughed at dinner" beats "my family."

Why it matters: gratitude re-orders your heart before you start asking. It reminds you who you're talking to.

Scripture: Psalm 100:4 · Journal prompt: What did God do in the last 24 hours that I almost missed?

2. Today's Prayer

What to write: one honest paragraph. Say it the way you'd say it out loud, not the way you'd say it at church.

Why it matters: honesty is the doorway. God is not offended by the real version.

Scripture: Psalm 62:8 · Journal prompt: What am I actually feeling right now, before I make it sound holy?

3. Prayers for My Children

What to write: each child by name, with one specific thing — their friendships, their courage, their heart toward God, the thing you noticed this week.

Why it matters: specific prayers are prayers you can watch God answer.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:6-7 · Journal prompt: What does each of my children need most from God this month?

4. Prayers for My Marriage & Family

What to write: what you're asking God for in your home — peace, kindness, patience, repair, provision. And what you're asking Him to change in you.

Why it matters: it's easy to pray about people and never pray about yourself.

Scripture: Colossians 3:12-13 · Journal prompt: What tone am I setting in my home right now?

5. Prayers for My Future

What to write: the hopes you're almost embarrassed to say. Work, calling, healing, a home, a family, a dream that won't leave you alone.

Why it matters: naming a hope in front of God keeps it from turning into quiet resentment.

Scripture: Proverbs 16:9 · Journal prompt: What am I hoping for, and am I holding it with open hands?

6. What I'm Surrendering to God

What to write: the thing you keep taking back. Write it, date it, and hand it over again.

Why it matters: surrender is rarely once. Usually it's daily.

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:7 · Journal prompt: What am I gripping because I don't trust God with it yet?

7. Scriptures I'm Standing On

What to write: two or three verses for this season, copied out by hand.

Why it matters: copying Scripture slows your eyes down and plants it deeper than reading does.

Scripture: Psalm 119:11 · Journal prompt: Which verse do I most need to remember on my hardest day?

8. Things I'm Waiting on God For

What to write: a running list with dates. Leave room to write the outcome later.

Why it matters: waiting feels shapeless until you can see it on paper.

Scripture: Isaiah 40:31 · Journal prompt: What is God growing in me while I wait for this?

9. Answers to Prayer

What to write: the date and what happened — including the answers that didn't look the way you expected.

Why it matters: this page will preach to you on the days your faith is thin.

Scripture: Psalm 34:4 · Journal prompt: When has God answered differently — and better — than I asked?

10. What God Is Teaching Me

What to write: one sentence a week. The thing He keeps bringing up.

Why it matters: growth is almost invisible day to day and obvious over a year.

Scripture: Romans 12:2 · Journal prompt: What has God said to me more than once lately?

How to Start a 5-Minute Prayer Journal Habit

  1. 1Attach it to something you already do — coffee, the school run, the moment before bed.
  2. 2Keep the journal and pen in that exact spot. Never move them.
  3. 3Write the date first. It's a tiny start, and starts are the hard part.
  4. 4Use two sections a day, not ten. Rotate through the rest across the week.
  5. 5Finish by writing one sentence you're thanking God for, then close the book.

Five minutes, most days, for a month. That's it. You are not trying to produce a beautiful book — you're building a relationship you can trace.

Sis, remember

A prayer journal isn't an assignment. It's a place to remember what you asked God for — and what He was doing in you while you waited.

Pray this

A prayer for you

Lord, thank You that prayer was never meant to be complicated. Thank You that You hear the prayers I write neatly and the ones I scribble half-asleep, the long ones and the ones that are only a name and a question mark.

Help me be honest on the page. I have a habit of tidying my words before I bring them to You, as though You don't already know what's underneath. Teach me to pour out my heart instead of editing it.

Give me eyes to notice what You're doing. So much of my life passes unremembered — the small mercies, the doors You closed that I later thanked You for, the people You put in my path at exactly the right hour. Help me write them down so my faith has a memory.

For the things I'm still waiting on, give me patience that isn't passive. Grow something in me while I wait. For the things I'm surrendering, give me the grace to leave them in Your hands longer than a day. And where my heart is hard or tired or distracted, soften it gently.

Thank You for being a God who listens. Not a God I have to convince. Let these pages become a record of Your faithfulness, so that on the days I can't feel You, I can read back and remember. In Jesus' name, amen.
